Compelling and wonderfully descriptive, Austin recalls his life experiences as a veterinarian travelling the globe, from his native Ireland to the far reaches of Australia and New Zealand. While not always glamorous, this collection of stories is achingly honest and utterly captivating.
With many laughs along the way, readers delight in accompanying him on his amazing journey.
Austin describes situations animals get themselves into, procedures that need to be done, and so much more. There is seldom a typical day in his life. From farm animals to domestic and everything in between, Austin encounters some pretty interesting creatures around the world. The animals rightly take centre stage and their unique personalities shine through in this beautifully written memoir. Many of the animals he encounters leave the reader with a sense of familiarity
I saw someone I follow on instagram had a copy of this book, and after messaging Austin to say I would love to read and review this book. He kindly emailed a copy of the book to read.
When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a vet and always reading the Lucy Daniels books. This book is like the true adult version of being a vet and I loved reading about all the different animal cases Austin has dealt with over the years.
I laughed at the story where the dead cat was in a suitcase and was stolen by some people (even though when I was telling my sister, she says that is quite a repeated story?. The fact a cow had eaten the farmers wedding ring and couldn’t tell his wife until he found it, but the wife already found it whilst using the cows placenta to make face creams. (Has anyone ever used that kind of face cream)
I cried when Austin was writing about when he was younger looking after his pig Willow, and how she managed to have one successful litter and then tried again and had terrible complications. I felt as if I was with Willow myself and going through her traumatic birth.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading medical memoirs, even more so as this is the first animal one I know of and also animal lovers in general. I will attach the link to buy it on Amazon below, and it also showing it to be a kindle unlimited book!
